Fees, Insurance & What to Expect

Your Questions About Therapy Rates and Insurance Answered

Find straightforward answers about session fees, superbill reimbursement, affordable counseling, and what to expect when using insurance or paying out-of-pocket at Ampersand Counseling Group.

  • How much does a typical therapy or counseling session cost?

A standard session is about $125, though rates vary by provider credentials and specialty. We offer both standard and intern-tier rates at our Liberty and Kansas City offices to fit a range of budgets.

  • Does Ampersand Counseling Group accept or bill insurance plans?

We are an out-of-network provider. We do not bill insurance directly but provide superbills for clients to submit for possible reimbursement. Please check your insurance for out-of-network mental health benefits.

  • What is a superbill, and how does it help with insurance reimbursement?

A superbill is a detailed receipt for your session that you can submit to your insurance. Many clients use superbills to seek partial reimbursement, depending on their plan’s out-of-network mental health coverage.

  • Are there affordable or lower-cost therapy options available?

Yes, we offer sessions with Master’s-level interns at reduced rates. This makes professional counseling more accessible to those seeking quality care at a lower cost at both the Liberty and Kansas City locations.

  • Will I get a Good Faith Estimate before starting therapy sessions?

Yes. In compliance with the No Surprises Act, self-pay and uninsured clients receive a written Good Faith Estimate for expected costs at least one business day before the first session to help you plan ahead.

  • What payment methods are accepted for therapy sessions?

We accept major credit cards, HSA/FSA cards, and other common payment forms through our secure Sessions Health portal. We also accept cash and checks. Payment is due at the time of service, whether in-person or via telehealth.

  • Are telehealth therapy sessions reimbursable by insurance plans?

Many insurance plans reimburse for telehealth therapy. We provide superbills for online sessions as we do for in-person appointments. Check with your insurer about telehealth coverage for Missouri and Kansas residents.
